Exploring Munnar – An Overview

I don’t know about you, but for me, the very name “Munnar” evokes an image of emerald green tea gardens, misty hills, and a serene escape from the chaos of urban life. It is certainly a gem that deserves a spot on every traveler’s bucket list.

If you have ever caught yourself thinking a question like “how can I spend 2 days in Munnar?” or “what should be my itinerary for 4 days in Munnar?” I am here to give you all the answers you need. But first, let’s go over some important details you might need as a first-time visitor here.

Location and Accessibility

So, where exactly is this godly place? Well, Munnar is situated in the southwestern state of Kerala, often referred to as God’s Own Country due to its natural beauty. To reach this enchanting hill station, you have two options.

If you prefer the scenic route, you can take a train to Aluva or Ernakulam, both well-connected cities in Kerala, and then continue your journey to Munnar by road. The drive to Munnar is a visual treat, with winding roads, lush forests, and breathtaking vistas.

Alternatively, you can fly into Cochin International Airport, which is the nearest airport to Munnar (approximately 125 km away), and then hire a cab to reach the hill station. It’s approximately a 4-5 hour drive from the airport. Now, onto accommodation!

Accommodation

Munnar offers various accommodation options to suit every budget and preference. Whether you’re a luxury traveler looking for a plush resort nestled in the hills or a backpacker searching for cozy guesthouses or homestays, Munnar has got you covered.

Some of my top choices are: Gokulam Home Stay, Avondale Luxury Cottage, and Eagle Mountain. These are all beautiful places to stay as well as affordable. The town center and its surroundings boast a plethora of hotels and resorts, making it convenient for visitors – especially first-timers – to find a place that suits your needs.

Cuisine

Now, let’s talk about food – an essential aspect of any travel experience. You guessed it– Munnar is a food lover’s paradise. Kerala, in general, is known for its delectable cuisine, and Munnar is no exception.

The local food is a delightful blend of spices, coconut, and fresh ingredients. Don’t miss out on trying Kerala’s famous ‘Sadhya,’ a traditional vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf. Seafood lovers will find their taste buds dancing with joy as they indulge in fresh catches from the nearby backwaters.

And, of course, there’s the tea! Munnar is synonymous with tea, and you must sip on some authentic Kerala tea, which is strong, aromatic, and incredibly soothing.

Best Time to Visit Munnar

Finally, the million-dollar question: when is the best time to visit Munnar? While Munnar is a year-round destination, the ideal time to experience its full glory is during the post-monsoon season (September to November) as well as the summer months  (March to May).

Around this time, Munnar’s weather is at its most pleasant; the skies are generally clear, offering stunning views of the tea gardens and hills. However, if you’re a fan of the monsoon, you’ll enjoy visiting here between June and August even more!

Top 5 Things to Do in Munnar

Now that we have got the basics out of the way, let’s finally discuss the five things to do in Munnar that are an absolute must.

Embrace the Tea Gardens

When you think of Munnar, the first image that probably comes to mind is endless stretches of lush green tea plantations. And you’re absolutely right! Munnar is popular for its tea, and one of the most quintessential experiences here is a visit to the tea gardens.

Start your day with a visit to the Tata Tea Museum, where you can learn about the history of tea cultivation in Munnar and even witness the tea-making process. Don’t miss a walk through the manicured tea gardens.

If you’re lucky, you might even get a chance to chat with the local tea pickers, who are always warm and welcoming. Plus, the views of the rolling hills covered in tea plantations make for fantastic photo opportunities.

Marvel at the Eravikulam National Park

Munnar isn’t just about tea; it’s also home to incredible wildlife and biodiversity. One of the best places to experience this natural beauty is the Eravikulam National Park, which is home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr.

Besides the Tahrs, you’ll also spot in the park some extraordinary mammals found only in the Ghats, including the Lion-tailed Macaques.

The highlight of a visit to Eravikulam is undoubtedly the trek to Anamudi Peak, the highest peak in South India. The trek isn’t overly strenuous, and the reward at the top is a breathtaking panoramic view of the Western Ghats.

Explore the Enigmatic Attukal Waterfalls

Munnar boasts some stunning waterfalls that have the power to make your jaw drop. Trust me, I speak from experience. One of the most mesmerizing waterfalls in the region is the Attukal Waterfalls; it’s just a short drive from the town center.

The journey to Attukal is an adventure in itself, as you navigate winding roads and lush greenery. Once you arrive, the sight and sound of the cascading water will take your breath away. The falls are surrounded by dense forests, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely picnic or a refreshing swim in the natural pools.

For the more adventurous travelers, there are trekking trails that lead to the top of the falls, providing a bird’s-eye view of the entire landscape.

Take a Shikara Ride on Kundala Lake

Apart from the vast array of land-based adventures, Munnar also offers serene waters. Kundala Lake, with its placid waters surrounded by lush hills, is the perfect place for a peaceful outing. And what better way to enjoy the lake than on a traditional Shikara ride?

Gliding through the tranquil waters on a Shikara, you’ll feel like you’re in a scene from a Bollywood movie. The hills bordering the lake are also famous for the unique phenomenon of Neelakurinji, where the hillsides burst into a sea of blue flowers once every 12 years. If your visit aligns with this event, you’ll witness a sight you’ll never forget.

The dreamy Neelakurinji

Kundala Lake is also home to the famous Kundala Arch Dam, where you can take a guided tour to learn about the engineering marvel and the history behind it. The gardens surrounding the dam are a great spot to take a leisurely stroll and a picnic.

Savor the Flavors of Munnar

And lastly, after all the exploration and adventure, you will want to treat your taste buds to the flavors of Munnar. The local cuisine here is a delightful blend of South Indian and Kerala specialties, and you won’t want to miss trying some of the regional dishes.

Start your culinary journey with a traditional Kerala Sadhya, a lavish vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf. It’s an explosion of flavors, with dishes like sambar, aviyal, and various types of pickles and sweets.

For seafood lovers, indulge in some fresh catch from the backwaters. Meen Pollichathu (fish cooked in banana leaves) and Karimeen Curry (pearl spot fish curry) are local favorites that will tantalize your taste buds.
